Cloudy, stained trays undo the discreet look that makes clear aligners so popular. Five professional habits keep them invisible from the first tray to the last.

Clear aligners are nearly invisible — but only if you keep them that way. Cloudy, stained trays undo the discreet look that makes aligners so popular. Here are five professional habits that keep them crystal clear from the first tray to the last.

1. Rinse every time you remove them

Saliva and food debris dry onto the plastic within minutes. A quick rinse under cool water before they go back in your case prevents most build-up.

2. Never use hot water

Heat warps the thermoplastic, ruining the fit. Always clean with cool or lukewarm water.

3. Clean with a dedicated foam, not toothpaste

Whitening toothpastes are abrasive and create micro-scratches that trap stains. A gentle foam cleanser such as SmileFresh lifts plaque without scratching.

4. Brush and floss before re-inserting

Trapping sugar against your teeth for hours invites decay. A 30-second brush keeps both teeth and trays healthy.

5. Store them dry and ventilated

A damp, closed case breeds bacteria. Let trays air-dry and keep the case clean.

Follow these and your aligners will stay as invisible as the day you received them.
